As the most vulnerable group in emergency response situations, children and young people are the central focus of all IODR initiatives. IODR projects themselves span several countries, and fall into two primary categories: immediate emergency relief and long-term managed and/or funded community projects.
IODR Emergency Relief This seeks to generate immediate funds and assistance in the aftermath of natural disasters such as the South Asian Tsunami. See below for details of the projects that IODR has worked on or supplied funds to:
South Asian Tsunami, Dec 04
Kashmir Earthquake, Oct 05
Burma Cyclone, May 08
IODR Long Term Managed and Funded Projects
IODR also recognises the need for sustainable charity projects in the Indian Ocean region, and is committed to lowering future levels of vulnerability in all areas in which projects are run. A crucial element of this involves strengthening the community's capacity to respond to emergencies and according locals an active part in their own development.
To this end, IODR programmes recruit staff from the local area, with a view to giving the community ownership of emergency responses and according locals an active part in their own future development. This is directly in keeping with IODR's values of transparency and accountability and best practice, and helps to enhance the overall quality of the aid that IODR is able to provide.
