Emergency Relief IODR are equipped to respond to natural disasters as they occur in countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. In recent years this area has been hit by 2 of the most devastating natural disasters of our generation. IODR have a strategic partnership with one of London's prestigious hotel chains, Grange Hotels. Who have utilised their network of hotels as collection points and their personnel as coordinators and assistants as and when these tragic events occur.
Emergency Tsunami Relief Dec 04 - March 05
. In the immediate aftermath of the Tsunami in December 2004, IODR and its commercial partner Grange Hotels coordinated the collection of donations and materials across Grange's 15 hotels in London. We also co-ordinated with the DEC for the collection of funds through collection boxes all over London.
. Grange Hotels also acted as the lead organisation for the British Hospitality Association and Visit London (formerly the London Tourist boeard) in the collection of donated items from the general public. This included thousands of blankets, clothes and shelter items. IODR then organised the transport by plane of these items which were then directly delivered to those in need in Sri Lanka.
Pakistan Earthquake Oct 05
. IODR and Grange Hotels teamed up again in the face of the Pakistan Earthquake in 2005. As well as raising funds for relief in the affected areas.
. IODR and Grange Hotels also flew a film and sound crew to Faisalabad in Pakistan in order to record a song and video with the England Cricket Team in order to raise funds following Asian Earthquake for the victims and survivors.
Sustainable Development
As well as being ready to respond to disasters as they occur, IODR also recognise that those affected by natural disasters also need long term sustainable development projects to help them rebuild their shattered lives.
The Weligama Community Welfare & Education Centre:
. The Weligama Community Welfare & Education Centre is IODR's first long term development project. It is currently being built on a 4 acre site near Weligama town in Southern Sri Lanka. It is hoped the Weligama centre will provide sustainable services to the community for years to come.
. Specifically, the Weligama Centre will identify vulnerable families and children in the community and work with them on livelihood programmes that improve their education and employment opportunities.
. Additionally, there will be a range of community health education and training programmes that will improve capacity for addressing specific health issues where capacity is currently lacking.
